What does meaningful work mean to you?

Hi there!

Did you know that only 14% of Australian and New Zealand employees are fully engaged in their work?*

Reflect on that for a moment.

If you’re a business leader, ask yourself honestly how you think your employees benchmark against that stat and how it may be affecting your business success.

If you’re an employee, ask yourself honestly how engaged you really are in your work. Are you giving it your best?

And if you’re a concerned citizen, ask yourself what implication this has for our economy. If increased productivity leads to economic growth, what does disengagement mean for productivity and our economy?

That’s the backdrop to an initiative from Australian recruitment agency Beaumont People.

They’ve partnered with researchers, Dr Elizabeth Shoesmith and Dr Jill Rathborne, to create Australia’s 1st Meaningful Work Profiling Tool to help individuals determine their need for meaningful work and assist organisations to provide more meaningful work.

I’m excited to support this important initiative and to invite you to take part in Australia’s first Meaningful Work Survey, so that together we can help shape the future of work in Australia.

I also invite you to share this with as many people as possible. Getting greater clarity on what #meaningfulwork means to each individual and connecting them to organisations that can deliver on their needs can create positive outcomes for everyone.

Help us to get as many people as possible to take part in this first survey.

BEHIND THE SCENES

That’s the call-to-action up-front.

Now I’d like to give you a little peek behind the scenes, which includes the Purpose development work The Cause Effect have done to help Beaumont People uncover and articulate their purpose and their social impact goal.

Beaumont People are a recruitment agency based in Sydney and Byron Bay. Since their beginnings in 2001, their philosophy of people before profit have underpinned their relationships with their own people, their clients and the candidates they place.

Placing people first is in their DNA. They know that by treating people with integrity, dignity and respect, the rest looks after itself.

Now they’re taking their next step – placing a priority on people’s aspirations to have meaningful work.

This has come from identifying their Purpose.

“At Beaumont People, we believe when people engage in meaningful work, they’re inspired to bring their best selves to the work they do, whatever it is.

This is transformational. Not just for themselves, but for the organisations they work with, their communities and for society.

It’s why we exist; our Purpose: To connect people to organisations that empower them to do meaningful work.”

When it comes to Purpose, you cannot manufacture it. We believe it’s not something you can outsource; for someone else to “come up with” your Purpose.

Michelangelo famously said about sculpturing –

“The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.”

We believe that is true about an organisation’s purpose.

The work we do at The Cause Effect is chiselling. Uncovering what perhaps you’re too close to see yourself. Your Purpose has to be a genuine and authentic representation of your business and your people.

Then we take another important step and ask the question – does this Purpose create genuine impact for society? If not, we take it further to connect it to a Social Purpose that is aligned with your business and your brand. Once that is clear, we work with you to develop a Social Impact Goal. This is important because ultimately this is what energises you, your people, colleagues and organisation to create real impact. In so doing, you attract customers/ clients who share your vision and want to support your goal; all of which drives your business success.

Beaumont People’s goal has driven them to take this first step of creating and launching Australia’s first Meaningful Work Survey. It connects them to their vision of a better world; one they want to contribute to.

Join us by taking the survey and sharing with your network.

Thanks in advance for your support.

REMEMBER, doing good is good for business. So if you're not doing any good... what are you doing?

P.S. When you're ready, here are 3 ways I can help you to build your Social Purpose strategy:
